The single control switch has two terminals and only one contact, which can be connected or disconnected. Please see the figure below for wiring:
The dual-control switch has three terminals and two contacts. One contact is turned on and the other is turned off. Please see the figure below for wiring:
Simply put, single-on-single control means that one switch controls one light, such as for the bathroom; single-on and dual-control means that two or more switches control one light.
